If you have ever walked the halls of Homewood and wondered, “who is that girl with the awesome sense of style and fashion” let me introduce you to Mkai Locklear. Mkai is 16 years old and loves the art of fashion. Her home school is Wilde Lake, but she also attended school in Baltimore where she had to wear a school uniform.
Mkai says that back in middle school she was a bit shy, but fashion helped her to build her confidence. Moving from Baltimore, where she regularly wore a dark shirt with khaki trousers, to Howard County where she was able to experiment and express herself through her clothing helped her to form a strong sense of herself. She says, “when people wear clothing that’s how they show what they like and how they present themselves.” Mkai looks at websites, YouTube videos, vlogs and blogs to get ideas, and study other people’s aesthetic. Looking at other people’s style has helped her form her own unique fashion sense. Mkai knows instantly what she likes and doesn’t like and she can tell right away if clothing will look good on her or not.
But for Mkai, fashion is so much more than just looking good. She says, “to be confident, don’t always second guess yourself, don’t always listen to other people’s opinions. If you feel you look good in it, wear it. And always take pictures. Always take pictures.”
Keep your eyes on Mkai because she is going places. When she leaves Homewood you might just be able to book an appointment with her as your personal stylist, cosmetologist or hair dresser. Better yet, you might be lucky enough to get her autograph after she walks the runways at fashion shows in Paris and Milan.
