Healthier Food, Happier People: Fresh Wheels at Homewood

Abigail Freeman

On Wednesday, November 13th  a group of five students, Jose Gaitan, Aidan Chadwick, Alex Bennett, Ashauri Cooper, and Abigail Freeman attended the AdCap Challenge in Washington, D.C.  They were chaperoned  under the leadership of Mr. Smith-Greene and Mrs. McMurtray.  The students had to pitch a business idea to a panel of  4 judges who are local business professionals.  The team with the best ideas would be given money to act out those ideas at their schools. Homewood’s team came home with a $3000.00 dollar grant! The idea the students pitched was a business called “fresh wheels”.  The students agreed that  the biggest thing wrong with schools is that they never have fresh food for breakfast or lunch. They devised a plan to partner up with local businesses to acquire free and reduced priced goods which could be served during lunch. Students could buy meals with Rise cards that they get for things like coming to, and staying in classes, and getting good grades. The team’s motto is “healthier food, happier people” and that’s just what they say they want for Homewood. The students think implementing a smoothie day would be a neat idea to consider once or twice a week as well. Either way they are very excited to start this project and share delicious treats with the entire school
