Profile of new Gateway AP, Dwayne Williams

Abigail Freeman, writer

Today I sat down with our new administrator, Mr. Williams, to get to know him a little better. This is his first year at Homewood and we are very excited to have him.

When asked about his first impressions he states, “My first impression at Homewood is that there are a lot of good things going on. There’s always stuff happening.  I am very excited about the whole trauma informed initiative which Homewood is taking on and I’m just glad to be a part of the process.”

I then proceeded to ask him about himself so that Homewood get to know our new administrator a little better

Q: “Did anything surprise you.“

“It didn’t so much surprise me. I know it’s a little different than comprehensive schools. But I’ve had a background in which I’ve worked in some challenging schools and it wasn’t so much  a challenge as it was me digging down into my toolkit to pull back up some things that I’ve used in previous schools.”

Q: “Did you always know you wanted to work at a school.”

“Absolutely,  I’ve always wanted to be a teacher and then an administrator, so it’s just good to be able to live that out.”

Q:“Is there anything you like to do in your spare time?”

Sure. I love to hang out with my kids.  My son is twelve my daughter is nine they are involved in a bunch of activities as well. I’m trying to coach my son’s basketball team my daughter does gymnastics she does track so we are normally just up and about, being active and hanging out with them. If it’s not me with the kids it’s normally me trying to play a little bit of basketball. And just making sure I stay in shape and doing things that are fun for me. I love roller coasters as well.

Q: If you could change one thing about the world what would it be?

A: If I could change one thing about the world I’ll tell you what’s near and dear to me it’s seeing the number of people that are homeless…if there was a way to end homelessness I would definitely pursue that.

Q: Is there anything you’d like the students of Homewood to know about you?

That I love my job. I love coming to work. I love working with teenagers, young students who are eager to learn.  I truly believe that I’m always willing to help and I believe once students open up to me they’ll believe I’m always willing to help with anything that they need from me, anything that they need me to assist them. I’m always willing to do it.

Please make sure to say hi to Mr. Williams and give him a  warm welcome to the Homewood family.
